Edith Swierzbinski
When her father decided it was time to sell his Dolphin Village liquor store in July 2017, Edith knew this was the opportunity she had been waiting for and, in December of that year, 4th & Vine was born. It seemed like fate that at the time she was finally able to open her shop, the century old North Ward Elementary School was looking for vendors to rent space within its historic doors. With its high ceilings and original pine wood floors, the space creates the ideal atmosphere for a wine store owned by someone raised in St. Petersburg. An added bonus of the space is the visitors who come in to see their former elementary school and show where their third grade desk was as they marvel over the changes that time has brought to the building they once knew so well.
Edith saw a niche in St. Petersburg for a locally owned wine shop that not only catered to the needs of individual clients, but introduced consumers to the wider world of wine outside of the big names seen on billboards or in larger stores. Her focus is on sourcing wine from small, independent vineyards from around the world and building a collection of natural, no sulfite added, low sugar, gluten free, and vegan (that’s right, some wines are not vegan!) wines. Currently, the 4th & Vine collection includes not only California, Washington, Italian, Spanish, and French wines, but also Portuguese, Greek, Slovenian, Georgian and Croatian wines.
Warm, welcoming, and wonderfully enthusiastic about wine, Edith is gifted at making even first time visitors to the shop feel like family. She quickly learns each customer’s name and has a knack for remembering what someone purchased on their last trip into the store. Her dedication to creating a catered and personalized experience for each customer extends to her system of hand-recording customer purchases so that she always has an answer when someone comes in and says, “what was that wine I got last time? I really liked it, but can’t remember!”
Edith knows that for many people, certain brands of wine are much more than an evening treat. She finds a lot of joy in talking to a customer who is about to celebrate an upcoming wedding anniversary and wants to special order the wine they had on their honeymoon. Others save corks from special events and make them into keepsakes like coasters or wreaths. These wines become memories; there are emotions tied to them. This is why Edith loves selling wine: to help others create memories, tell stories, and become closer over shared experiences & a good bottle of wine.
Edith and her family have been a part of the St. Petersburg community since 1990. She was immersed in wine education and sourcing for 12 ½ years as a wine buyer helping her father research and choose which wines to bring into their family-owned store in Dolphin Village.
